i am extremely pleased that this site offers a great oppertunity for the new libyan women of today.
It satisfies me to know that finally womens achievement are now being rewarded in the aribic world.
i genuinely hope that futhermore sites similar to this will now formulate. I am honoured to be a libyan woman
in now a world which welcomes women as equals and has no place for discrimination and prejudice.
Althought the arabic nation as many had no place for weomen it is certainly agreeable to say that
we as a nation are finally stepping up to fully recognise that
women are certainly an achieving body in the world.
i hope that this site will expand and be recognised for its achievements.

Asísalam Alaykum
Dear Tibra Team, Fellow Guests, Brothers & Sisters and to whom it may concernÖ
First and foremost my sincere congratulations to the nominees and winners of the various programs and awards presented by this siteÖmay God bless you AND every one of us with success and prosperity inshaíalla! May god also bless the hard working Libyan students AROUND the globe, those IN Libya AND abroad (for we are one, and ONE for all)Öespecially those Libyan students who have left a tremendous impression on those who taught them since the earliest of times and those who continue to surprise the world with their outstanding capabilities, brilliance and contributions to the vast and everlasting fields of educationÖI was informed about this site by a friend, and I must say that I am quite IMPRESSED! I have read through the pages and the various comments and views of the many people who added their entries into this guestbook and I have gotten a pretty good idea about WHAT this site is all about and HOW the many guests feel about itÖand it appears to me that MANY, including myself, are HAPPY.
BUT I must say this site IS uniqueÖin that unlike MANY other Libyan related websites, this site is actually upholding a peaceful, effective and beneficial aim for the younger community -> and that aim is to provide an opportunity for the chance to recieve financial support to pursue higher educational goals (through the Tibra and Fijra Scholarship Programs) as well as recognizing young achievers (through the Tibra Achievement Award), and these wonderful programs and awards are being funded by contributions from Libyans in six different countries (including Libya) and are intended for our fellow young Libyan sistersÖnow may I ask what could be a more noble and just cause???
Many of the people who have added their comments to this guestbook I know in personÖand I have MUCH MUCH respect for them, BUT I must speak out for what I feel is true -> I donít think that a little humble gift of recognition or awards for excellence in education to ANYONE of ANY nationality, religion, race, or gender could cause ANY harm or disappointment to ANYONEÖalthough I DO understand that there are MANY different points of criticism about the site brought up by some of its viewers. What IS important to MY opinion are NOT the little additions or articles made by the various site owners OR the visual presentation of this siteÖwhat IS important to ME is the PURPOSE of this site and whether OR not the commitments are being fulfilled?
And if they ARE being fulfilled I could not care less about the other minor things that have been added, said or presented on the site, because the PURPOSE overwhelms those small thingsÖand YES Libyan women in Libya ARE ìwell recognized and respected by their own people in Libyaî ñ and that lovely ìspectrumî DO ìevoke a sense of determination and sacrifice in our soulsîÖbut I must say that I see this as an opportunity for building a future for a Liby-ANÖnot for Liby-A ñ and a better Libyan IS a better LIBYAÖam I not correct???
As for those making a big deal of themselvesÖlet them be, and those who are humble about themselvesÖlet them be, those who hold PhDísÖlet them be, and those who hold High School DiplomasÖlet them be, those who are patrioticÖlet them be, and those who are fakeÖlet them be, and of course those who want to cook bazeen & cous-cousiÖLET THEM BE please, I love both bazeen AND cous-cousiÖI sure donít mind that, lol -> BUT LET ìOPPORTUNITYî BE as wellÖand I honestly think this is a wonderful chance for the younger generation of Libyan women that fulfill the requirements to be eligible for the nominations and that it is a wonderful effort on behalf of those who initiated and created the site and program.
I would like to see for a CHANGEÖfellow Libyans united and holding hands for a good cause, and what could be better than providing opportunity for higher educationÖeven one penny for one person is WELL worth it! Letís put our differences and personal opinions aside for once, and come together to invest in the future of our great country and an investment of a GOOD WORD in this guestbook is a start, and I hope that my message was complimentary and encouraging this was the least a common Libyan student as myself could doÖwe would like to wish you ALL the best -> guys AND girls alike, good job with the site keep up the good work, and may God bless your souls, wa asísalam alaykum wa rahmat allahi wa barakatu!!!

salam alykum every body
it is the first time a have a good read of the comments made in the guest book and ihave BIG MESSAGE TO SAY TO mr. AHMED FROM THE UK.
WHY ARE YOU SAYING THAT GIRLS WHO ARE INVOLVED IN THE TIBRA ACTIVITIES/AWARDS HAVE SCRAPPED THEIR ISLAMIC HEJAB?????
THAT IS NOT TRUE AT ALL?
I WAS INVOLVED IN THE TIBRA AWARDS 2005 AND I AM VERY RELIGIOUS AND I WEAR THE FULL HEJAB (ALHAMDULLAH), WHAT DO YOU BY GIRLS ARE BEING WESTERNIZED, DOES BEING SUCCESSFULL IN LIFE OBJECT WITH BEING RELIGIOUS! I REALLY DO NOT THINK SO, I BELIEVE THAT ISLAM HIGHLY SUPPORTS BEING SUCCESSFULL IN LIFE REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU ARE A MALE OR A FEMALE.
TIBRA IS CONCERENED RELIGIOUS MATTERS, IT IS REMARKING LIBYAN GIRLS WHO HAVE MANAGED TO ACHIEVE WHILE THEIR AWAY FROM HOME(LIBYA) AND THAT IS A HONOR FOR LIBYA, THE FACT THAT LIBYAN ARE SUCCESSFULL WHERE EVER THEY GO!
ONE THING THAT I FOUND VERY ANNOYING IS THE FACT THAT YOU WRITE COMMENTS THAT ( I FIND VERY INSULTING) AND THEN YOU WRITE A MASSIVE APOLOGY, WHAT IS THE POINT!!!!
FINALLY I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE TIBRA TEAM FOR THEIR BRILLIANT EFFEORT.. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK IT IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED.
SALAM

I would like to thank everybody involved in this initiative because it is about time
that Libyan women inside and abroad received some recognition for their
tremendouse achievements. I am particularly proud of all our Libyan American
candidates since that's what I am.
As far as the "hater" Muhammad Laklouk is concerned, I'd like to make a few
comments: First, why is it that pro Gaddafi Libyans always have something
negative to say about anybody that got the chance to escape the tyranny their
beloved dictator rules the country with. Secondly, they are always so quick to put
down the hard work that other Libyans have done, yet they offer absolutely
nothing but their empty comments and stupid Gaddafi slogans. Thirdly, what
kind of teaching opportunities in Libya is he referring to? I've been to Libya
numerous times. Is he talking about the teaching jobs that pay a salary of 200
Libyan Dinars, a grand total of about $1740 annually(when available, sometimes
100, and sometimes nothing)in the most primitive learning environments this
century. I think I speak on behalf of all sane Libyans when I say "Stop hating,
and start appreciating".

I recently read through the guestbook and was saddened at some intelligent people from Libya stating that they unlike the one's abroad got on with their lives in Libya and did not boast about their achievements or work. I feel in the spirit of ramathan I have to defend The Tibra Foundation. I first noticed it when it got started a few years ago, and mentioned it to people (i.e libyans), they all dismissed it and said it would fade away. I being cynical believed this was the correct view to take. As the years passed, the foundation grew, and each year it impressed me with its dedication. Dear Sir (since you are a gentleman) nobody who is Libyan and lives abroad thinks themselves better then their cousins, brothers/sisters, neighbours, friends, classmates..etc who live in Libya. Its not you (i.e Libyans in Libya) versus us the Libyans who are abroad (first generation/second generation/etc). In fact we all hear your news through our family grape vines and libyan communites abroad, but nobody hears ours. We all live far away from each other, and are isolated. Tibra provides a welcome way of connecting to our Libyan roots and our communiites around the world. We are trying not to forget the place our parents call home, but we have only fragmented memories. Some of our younger generations have never been back home and were born abroad. These kids have never gone to our fantastic beaches and eaten dila (i.e watermelon) in season with their cousins. Tibra is for EVERYONE, whether living in Libya or abroad. As to the pictures, yes we cannot but be influenced by our surroundings. Its not a crime, or is it? All these girls apply with their family support and permission. I don't think you can comment, until you have walked in their shoes and have children yourself. And for the record if you do have children, then be kind in this month of ramathan and think abit more before you attack someone who is trying to help her community, when it seemed very dark at times.

Leebeeya from Other wrote on October 11. 2004:

Salamu alaikum,
I think I may have already made a post saying how TIBRA is a great initiative.
I also think that it is commendeable that we highlight the successes of the young women
in our Libyan communities outside of Libya. Some of the spotlight inductees are actually
Libyan women living in Libya. I dont think it is unfavourable or bad to highlight great achievements
and increase a healthy spirit of competition amongst young Libyan ladies.
Now about living our lives in the west, many people do not realize that we would love to return to
the land that bred and raised our parents, and we would love to serve the country which we
subsequently call home, but unfortunatley things are easier said than done. Some people
cannot live in Libya, not because of any choice made on their part but rather a choice made by
their government. I commend all Libyan women who have achieved success in this life, and I
hope that they all keep in mind, that we are merely pasing through this life, and that we should
not lose focus of where we are headed after we are done here. I think we should commend our
young Tibra nominees because they inspire us with their success and their great contributions to
the communities in which they live, many are visible minorities and have succeeded in being top
contributing members of their communities. As a libyan citizen living in the west, I do not want to save
all my dedication for the day that I might be able to go and live in Libya and serve the Libyans there.
As a Muslim and a Libyan my values taught to me by my parents, taught to them by their parents,
and passed on through generations of strong Muslim Libyans are to be the best possible human I
can be, and to leave a mark on society wherever the world takes me.

I study with Muhammad Laklouk , and i totally agree with him in every word he said not because he's my friend ...but i'm really convinced with his point of view.
This website is a total failure and it isnt contributing anything to Libyan women.

Muhammad Laklouk from Libya wrote on September 30. 2004:

I am a medical student from Tripoli , Libya ...and i accidentally found this website in the ''google'' search , i read about the objectives and purposes of this so called Libyan community project , and i would like to express my point of view.
Women in Libya do not require your enriching , nor highlighting of their success & achievements because they are well recognized and respected by their own people in Libya , many women in Libya recieved their education & qualifications from the US and Europe and they are back here to sacrifice and dedicate themselves to enlight the younger emerging generations with their experience .
And when i talk about ''successful'' women , it includes a very large spectrum....starting from primary school teachers who teach Libyan children (which include the fathers of many of the Tibra members) , to University professors , Medical doctors ,nurses, government officials , police & military officers...etc. And these are the women that inspire and encourage the younger girls , these are the women that evoke the sense of determination & sacrifice in our souls , and they resemble the ideal patriotic Libyans , because they are contributing in building a better future for Libya .
So Tibra members.....you can't inspire Young Libyan women by displaying personal pictures on the internet , or by writing autobiographies , or by boasting with your personal achievements , or showing-off your certificates ....because you are offering nothing to Libyan people by any vivid means , i mean the rhetoric that has been spent on this site will not feed Libyan women .
And why are you making such a big deal with your so called degrees and professions ? in Libya we have many Doctors , university professors , and PhD holders who recieved their degrees and certificates from the US,UK,and Europe.....and they keep a low profile and never talk about themselves , and they are doing their jobs perfectly ! i mean even Albert Einstien didn't write about himself all that stuff you did !
So when i carefully analysed this website , i concluded that its members lost their Libyan identity and were unable to integrate within the American society, and they're trying to seek recognition from Libyans abroad , so they are in limbo....and they are trying to show that they are Americans by displaying their pics and writing about their civic and professional acts....but i want to tell you that i never saw an American doing that stuff , even when it comes to celebrities they never talk too much about themselves. and at the same time they desperately want to tell us how good they are in cooking bazeen & couscous ,huh... what an irony !
It's a real dilemma for the Tibra members , and i hope they get a way out of it , and by the way Tibra women : you can keep your claimed success to yourselves because nobody needs it here , and as i told you previously you resemble nothing to Libyan women , because internet information is unofficial and it stands ''nothing'' to them , Women in Libya are sharing their success with us in schools & universities and that is more than enough .
And last but not least , this comment is not intended to harm or insult anybody , and it is not diercted to anyone in person .....its just a point of view which i hope many visitors will share with me.
Thank you for reading this message .

salamualaikum,
First of all, I want to say I respect the "spotlight" girls for their achievements.
The point of my post, however, is to express my (and others') feelings of distaste
and disappointment in the fact that tibra has yet to
post a "spotlight" of a young woman who is mit7ebja (covers with hijab).
When libyans and non-libyans alike sign on to this sight
they not only see a representation of Libyan women, they see a representation
of MUSLIM women. There's a frighteningly low emphasis put on Islam and the importance and pride
found in girls who a) cover in the proper, Islamic attire b) strongly represent their deen.
I hope TIBRA does something to change this.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Ramadan Mubarak! I recently was browsing the Tibra sight and came across a discussion that I have read in earlier postings regarding the westernization of young Libyan women who are featured in the Tibra Spotlight. While I can understand that to some it may seem from this very short briefing that many of the young women (including myself) have assimilated into western culture because of the photos on the site or the professional and civic activites we participate in, it does not mean that we are any less Muslim. The short spotlight stories that feature our lives and how we have overcome adversity are a small view into our life - not the whole of it. As we have embarked on this wonderful month of Ramadan al kareem, I would share with you that my entire network of colleagues, friends and even those whom I do not know well have been learning about our wonderful faith and way of life - Deen Al Islam. As a result of me being who I am (a strong and proud Muslim Libyan woman living in the US) others of all walks of life who I encounter learn about my faith and my rich heritage because I embody it in my actions. The goal of the Tibra Foundation is to show young Libyan women who live abroad that they can be proud of who they are (Libyan and Muslim) and still achieve success. The Foundation highly values and promotes young Libyan women of solid character for striving to better themselves through higher education. Those of us who have lived abroad have had different experiences indeed from our brothers and sisters who grew up their entire lives in Libya, however, many of us have been blessed with loving and wonderful parents who were adamant about ensuring that we learned the Qur'an, attended the Masjid, interacted with other Muslims, spoke Arabic and practiced it frequently and so on. I am forever indebted to my mother and father (may Allah bless him as he rests in peace) for teaching me about my faith and background. It was their steadfast teachings that provided me with the knowledge of the important values that have made me the person I am today. My husband and I continue to learn about our faith and look forward to teaching our children about it in the future in sha Allah.
Each day we praise Allah for the gift of Islam. I wish you all a Ramadan Kareem.

A comment for Al-Eryan
Dear Al_eryan
Thank you for you contractive comments and I totally respect you for them but I do not accept "tunnel-versioned men" and I must say I was deeply hurt by that particular line. Just for you peace of mind I am an educated young man ( BTW what means less that 30 ;) ) who has studied for all his life in the UK and I am currently still studying for a higher university Degree. This is not the point but my point is that a "Typical Libyan Girl" does not or should not be presented to the whole world as Tibra is putting forward and that is non-Islamical, westernized and the ideology of "Blend in" and that has nothing to do with our Libyan heritage. The other thing is that on the contrary to what Al-Eryan might have said I do respect these young individuals for there Academic achievements. Dear Al-Eryan you mentioned " meaningless stuff" and you forgot to put religion in the important category I have to say I feel very sorry for you Al-Eryan as you belittle our wonderful religion and the way it has portrays the Islamic dress ( Al-Hegab if you have never heard of it ). Last of all I have to commend the west ( in Al-Eryan's case the USA ) for a successful brain wash and that is has finally turned us against us and have changed our prospective of life.
Many Thanks & I Wish all of you a Ramadan Mubarik

Comments on Ahmad?s post below.
Dear Ahmad,
By clicking on ?about us? button in http://www.tibra.org , you will find some help to your ? I can?t understand what Tibra is doing? ?As to the rest of your note, it seems you have nothing of positive to say about Tibra foundation. You think Tibra has nothing good to offer and is doing more harm to our culture/religion. Your measuring stick was the photo of these young ladies. Ya salam! I tell you dear Ahamd, it saddens me too but by a deferent reason: It?s the likes of you who dwell on the un-weighable and meaningless stuff and pay no attention to the real stuff; things like high educational degrees, achievements, the challenge of crossing the barbwired obstacles of culture and competing with dominating, demented and tunnel-versioned men?. These young ladies deserve all the support and encouragements they can get, for, Libyan girls in particular have it unfairly rough!

Dear Libyan Brothers/Sisters
I can not understand what Tibra is doing ? Is it pointing out the sad obvious fact that increasing number of Libyans are migrating to the west and residing there? if that is not what Tibra is doing then it is encouraging young Libyan Females to scrap the Islamic dress code and become more westernized and try to blend into there society and this point is stressed at the "Spotlight" section where ,with all due respect, I can not even recognize if any of these young Females are Libyans ( for the exception of Mrs Bin Taher ) and this is very sad.
I Wish you all best & Ramadan Mubarik
Many Thanks

You are doing a masterful job, and, God willing, your efforts will help a generation of Libyans worldwide. Let us remember that any Libyan who is helped by this organization helps Libyans worldwide, whether we are affected directly or not. and for Mr.Anonymous,if you knew that this page is not a discussion Board,I don't know why are you doing so.
Hope you feel better now,and you have fed your ego Also hope you will continuo reviewing this page with your pointing Gun on and waiting only for the next victim.

I know this is a guestbook and not a discussion board but I couldn?t help but reply to the comments made by Mr. Khalifa Forjany. This page was established and is dedicated to recognize and applaud successful Libyan women. I fail to see how ?it? or the people behind it ought not forget about Libyan guys. If Mr. Forjany's comments are meant as a general reminder and not directly pointed towards this page, then I encourage him to take the initiative and start a project as worthy as Tibra that recognizes and highlights Libyan men?s accomplishments, instead of expecting others to do so!

Dear Tibra and the Libyan Community,
I would like to thank all the Libyan Women who have participated and who will participate in this organization that gives new light to the Libyan community. All of your wonderful and amazing accomplishments encourage Libyan women like me to strive harder in life. I especially want to thank the 2003 June Spotlight, Iya Khalil, not only has she been a great sister but she is one of the few women that I look up to in the most highest esteem. I only hope that I have made a difference in her life as she has impacted mine.
With that said I want to congratulate the new and past Tibra and Spotlight award recipients and hope that there are many other young Libyan women candidates who have the same ambition and drive as you all do.
To all those young Libyan women remember to be independent, to achieve, and to be educated. For your education is the most powerful tool you have in order to survive in this world.

Excellent work and I wish you continued success.
The success of libyan women will mean success for
libyan men because we are all motivated and influenced
by our mothers, sisters, wifes and daughters.
I have made a reference to your work in articles
published on other libyan sites and I will continue
to air your success.
My one suggestion to you is to encourage libyan
women to publish articles here in either english or arabic
covering cultural, social or any other topics.
I am confident that libyan women will make more sense and
articulate better ideas and more wisdom than some men!!
Keep up the good work and believe in yourselves as
full equal partners in contributing to a better future for libya.

sorry but i think this is a very stupid idea because money likethis should be used in Libya not abroad. In England and in Rich western countries the country can help anyone why do we have to help. i would rather put my money towards a charity. and dont think im jealous coz im well educated and i have not forgotten my language and culture and religion and i am well paid.

Assalamo alykom,
May god be please with you all stuff & winners on this website.
technically, your web still needs hard work such as ,Links, fiugers
and of course Arabic page,do not forget that you are an arab soceity
so, must be proud of your language as well, Am i wrong?
On top of that, and to be honest with you i did not like the idea of being
proud of some westernize Libyan women who I have to say that they lost thier
relationship with the original community of the homeland, hope you get it right!
So far, you did the first step and the queation is will you continou?!
hopfully you have the answer.
Love& respect,

This comment is in response to the comment made by Al-Mukhtar from Canada.
While the word 'tibr' is the noun used to describe the bulk material (raw gold, nuggets or even the raw mineral), it is also understood to be in the plural form. It is quite correct to refer to a single golden nugget as 'tibra'. In fact, most Arabic dictionaries start defining 'tibr' by saying : tibr, alwa7ida tibra ...
This is not dissimilar to the common usage of the term 'Sakhra' to denote the single of "Sakhr". Again 'Sakhr' is both singular (when referring to the material or bulk) and plural when denoting a discrete number of objects.

The one mile journey starts with one step, and actually you have already started steady. May Allah (SWT) guide you and fix your hearts in the right path.
Although the name "Tibra" is somehow a common name in some parts of Libya, but it is not correct in the Arabic language. It is "tibr", which means gold.
Keep up the good work
